Fruit flies, pet hair and the news

Well, let me rant on something for a moment. Fruit flies!

It is getting to the point that I NEVER want to buy bananas again because every time I do we get an infestation of fruit flies. Am I the only one with this issue or is it a massive silent epidemic? I don't remember having this many problems in the past but the last few times I bought bananas, they came with a bonus - damn flies!

Okay...so to another annoyance - pet hair. I am up to my eyeballs in dog and cat hair. If I collected it all right now I could either knit a couple of new pets out of the hair or I could send some poor allergic person to the hospital in critical condition. AHHHHH! I vacuum but there is no end. Okay. So I ranted and said my piece.

On other topics - I was listening to NPR (BBC America) news in the car this morning. I am just going to STOP listening to any news at all. Death, death, death, oh and madness served with a side of abject cruelty culminating in DEATH! I so totally underestimate the ability of human beings to inflict death and violence upon one another. WHY? I'm at a loss. My only prayer is that one day we hear the news and it'll be GOOD for a change. My prayers go out especially to the victims of the Haiti earthquake. There is still no accurate understanding of just how bad the damage is. What a tragic event.

Sigh....

Anyway, my meager self will go about my daily business and not bitch about the cat hair or the fruit flies in my kitchen since no one is at the door trying to kill me for whatever belief system I may have or use my organs in rituals in Uganda. I'll be thankful for the stopped up toilets and the traffic light that I didn't get to go through. I won't complain about not getting the chicken that was on sale at the grocery store or the fact that the pets need food. I'm spoiled. I'm so disconnected from the harsh realities of other people in the world and in a way it makes me ashamed. Ashamed of my comfortableness. Others in the world are starving, dying, being attacked or held captive or being sold into slavery. I guess it's easier for us Westerners to lose ourselves in the plastic world we've constructed. Each town with the same comfortable restaurants and stores. Clothes that everyone needs to have because it's 'in'. Cars that are more expensive than my parents home of 30 years ago. Are we desensitized? Are we callous? What can one person do? I struggle with this all the time. Heck, we have people here at home that are on the streets, no food, no shelter, no medical care, no place to call home. We have mentally ill that are released to the streets because they have no where to go. We have folks who once worked out there with them. We even have our veterans out there struggling with their past and how to fit in. What about ex-cons who have paid their debt and try desperately to fit into a society that doesn't care if they finished their sentence or not.

We as a species have a LONG way to go in the evolution of the heart and mind. We might have opposable thumbs but we certainly do not have open compassion and the willingness to see a different way to live. Hell, if aliens come here they probably would think we're one of the most brutal societies they've come across. The sad part is that there is such beauty too. We are capable of both - great violence and great beauty.

Anyway, I've ranted enough. I'll meditate on trying to make the world a better place for everyone and for peace, justice and common sense to reign on our lovely planet.

With all this in mind, I'll go to the studio and see what I can come up with.

Wishing everyone a very mindful day - please keep those in the world less fortunate in your thoughts.

~Peace
Michelle
